The
Waie Inn (Waie Farm as it was then) was purchased in
1967 by Trevor & Jean Burrow and run as a farm in
conjunction with their other family farm near Bow up
until 1972, when they decided to diversify and
utilise the existing farm buildings and convert them
into living accommodation.
This was done over a number of years, providing
holiday cottages in addition to the Farmhouse B&B
which Jean was providing as an additional income to
the farming activities.
A
group of local tradesmen were employed, on a full
time basis, covering all trades from carpenters,
stonemasons, brickies, & painters/decorators. Over
a period of four years the holiday cottages expanded
in number to eight units, all the conversions being
done during the Autumn/winter months when other work
was quiet.
During 1976 the old Silage and Hay barn was the only
building left to convert. Several ideas were put
onto paper and various plans drawn up, with the
outcome being to convert the buildings into a Public
House. This idea had several reactions in the local
community, bringing forth considerable opposition
from local residents worried about noise and extra
traffic. The idea was put forward to planners and
with support from many locals and friends, and a
petition signed by a couple of hundred people helped
the idea come to fruition.
After a long hard slog , many hours of work and
considerable expense, The Waie Inn was officially
opened on 13th July 1980.
Over the 25 years that the Waie has been open, we
have added on a few more facilities such as Indoor
Heated swimming pool, Squash courts, Children's
playground, fishing lakes and Caravan and camping
area. In February 2001 a new extension (The Lantern
Suite) was opened to make the functions room
considerably larger upstairs and will give further
facilities downstairs with new skittle alleys and
larger bar area's.
Disabled facilities have also been improved by way
of means of access to most areas, new disabled
access toilets and also a wheelchair lift to the
first floor functions room has been installed.
July
2005 saw the installation of a 5 a side all weather
football pitch, and its first tournament was played
on the Sunday of our anniversary week which proved a
very successful addition to the facilities on offer
to the public.
Latest addition: April 2007 saw the opening
of the purpose built Indoor Children's play barn and
is proving a great asset to the venue.
